before the industrial era it is assumed that a CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration of 280 ppm remained quite constant.<\/p>\n<p>Since the beginning of the industrial era (1750) it is estimated that 365 billion metric tons of carbon have been emitted by human activities into the atmosphere<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a>.<br \/>\nFrom these 30.3\u00b710<sup>12<\/sup> Kmol of CO<sub>2<\/sub> approx. 2\/3 remained in the atmosphere to reach a concentration of 390-400 ppm and 1\/3 was captured in the form of additional biomass or sediments.<\/p>\n<p>If in the total atmosphere of 182\u2019000\u00b710<sup>12 <\/sup>Kmol the same ratio would apply, burning all fossil reserves would add 525 ppm to the present level, and therefore the \u201cultimate\u201d CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration would reach 925 ppm.<\/p>\n<h2>What temperature increase could it provoke?<\/h2>\n<p>According to Myhre et al<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a> the primary forcing resulting from a change of CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration is:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mr-int.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Eq_DeltaF.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-801\" alt=\"Eq_DeltaF\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mr-int.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/Eq_DeltaF.png\" width=\"119\" height=\"36\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 , 1.25 to 2.28\u00b0C, and with a feedback of -1.3 W m<sup>-2<\/sup> K<sup>-1<\/sup> that combines the effects of Planck law, water vapour, clouds, albedo, and lapse rate<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn6\">[6]<\/a>, the overall anthropogenic temperature increase would be 0.93 to 1.20 \u00b0C, or it would increase by 0.65 to 0.85 \u00b0C from today\u2019s level.<\/p>\n<h2>In view of the result is it worthwhile to worry?<\/h2>\n<p>Well, probably not. And then there will be nothing else left\u00a0 to burn than renewable biomass!<\/p>\n<p>The impact of about one degree on the temperature of the atmosphere may well remain hidden within wide variations due to other causes.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore there is no urgency to adopt drastic controlling policies and it is wiser for us and many following generations to take the time to adapt to such uncertain and probably insignificant change.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s high time to do nothing rather than terrorizing the crowds with catastrophe scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>Sorry for the activists, they will have to find another cause for saving the planet.
