{"id":2468,"date":"2015-07-15T14:40:50","date_gmt":"2015-07-15T13:40:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mr-int.ch\/?p=2468"},"modified":"2015-07-15T15:34:05","modified_gmt":"2015-07-15T14:34:05","slug":"climate-plausibility-of-ipccs-estimates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mr-int.ch\/?p=2468&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Climate: plausibility of IPCC\u2019s estimates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In its last Summary for Policymakers, on page 16 <a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change (IPCC) writes\u00a0: \u201cEquilibrium climate sensitivity is likely in the range 1.5\u00b0C to 4.5\u00b0C (<em>high confidence<\/em>), <em>extremely unlikely<\/em> less than 1\u00b0C (<em>high confidence<\/em>), and <em>very unlikely<\/em> greater than 6\u00b0C (<em>medium confidence<\/em>).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its jargon the term equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) means the average temperature rise at the surface of the globe that the climate system would show for any doubling of the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>).<\/p>\n<p>Since the beginning of the industrial era the CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration rose from 280 to 400 ppm, a 43% increase.<\/p>\n<p>What would then be the calculated temperature if we use the IPCC values?<\/p>\n<p>It needs to be remembered that the radiative forcing implied in the warming by so-called greenhouse gases varies in proportion to the logarithm of the concentration. Almost nothing is left to natural causes, because none was sought and therefore none was identified.<\/p>\n<p>Worse, in its medium scenario, CO<sub>2<\/sub> would have contributed to 166% of the observed warming which would imply that other causes would have contributed to a 0.62 \u00b0C cooling, still without discussion and quantification. The same observation applies for the high ECS estimate where a cooling of not less than 1.32\u00a0\u00b0C should have taken place if we would not have burnt fossil fuels and produced cement.\u00a0 We would find ourselves in a regime even colder than the minimum of the little ice age, from which we began to get out well before any human consequence of the industrial era could have played any warming role.
